About Pantheon
The Pantheon's most incredible feature isn't how old it is — it's how little has gone wrong. Rebuilt by Hadrian in 126-128 AD, it has been in continuous use ever since, first as a Roman temple, then as a Christian church from 609 AD onward — the single reason it survived nearly intact while almost every other ancient Roman building around it was quarried for stone.
The dome is the real trick: 43.3 meters wide and exactly 43.3 meters tall, a perfect sphere that would fit inside the building, poured in unreinforced concrete that gets progressively lighter toward the top using volcanic pumice instead of stone. At the very center is the oculus — an 8.2-meter opening with no glass at all. Rain falls straight through onto the marble floor below, which still drains it through 22 holes cut nearly two thousand years ago.
