How to explore Taipei
Taipei doesn't look like a capital that spent decades unsure whether it was temporary — but for much of the 20th century, it was exactly that. When the Nationalist government retreated from mainland China in 1949, it brought roughly 700,000 imperial artifacts with it — including 2,972 crates shipped out of Beijing's Forbidden City just before civil war reached the capital. Those crates became the core of the National Palace Museum, a building deliberately designed to echo the palace the collection was taken from.
The rest of the city grew up around that same uncertainty: a Japanese colonial grid downtown, temples and night markets that never stopped operating through every regime change, and a mountain-ringed basin that keeps the whole city humid and dense — but, once you're actually walking it, surprisingly easy to get around.
